No She Didn't!

I'm an attorney at a silk stocking firm. I work very hard to compete with and out perform my male counterparts. I'm well respected and enjoy being successful. But a situation that occurred the other day has me feeling baffled and disrespected. I was seated in first class - in a row of what I assumed were professional men. I believe I was the only woman in the section. The female flight attendant walked through asking for everyones drink selections. "Sir, what would you like to drink?" After taking their orders, she would say thank you. However, when she got to me, she referred to me as sweetie. I'm not her sweetie. Should I have corrected her?

The sister-girl in me would have stopped her dead in her tracks. In my opinion, you’re not imagining the disrespect. I would like to think I’d say exactly what you wanted to, “I’m not your sweetie. But I’ll take a Jack and Ginger, no ice.” But in reality, I’d probably be just as stunned as you were and upset on the inside. If I ever am in a situation such as this, I’ll be ready. That’s thanks to you for posing a “What Would You Do” scenario.

Hello First Classy. Absolutely you should have corrected her on
the spot. False terms of endearment are disrespectful, no matter
which gender they come from, and should never be endured. A
direct look into her eyes with a 1rm, “ I prefer Ms., Ma’am, or
Madame” , accompanied with a smile. You will have done a
favor by educating her in proper etiquette towards her customer,
and, who knows, perhaps saved her from a “beat down” on the
next flight. Not everyone is as classy as you!
