Dear My Momma Says

My family is terrific. They love me and I love them. For the last 10 years they have flowered me with wonderful gifts for my birthday and other occasions. However, at my age, I don't want or need more THINGS. What I do want is more experiences. Experiences to travel and attend happenings I've never had the chance to. How do I tell my loved ones this without hurting their feelings? - Sheila, Chicago, Ill

As you expressed, your family loves you and takes your happiness to heart. You only live once, why not be direct and ask for what you want. Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Why not take charge this year and let them know what you’d like. Instead of flowers, if you’d like them to contribute to a vacation, let them know your plans and that you’d like them to contribute to a plane ticket.

I bet instead of guessing, they’d be thrilled to get you something you’d really enjoy!

Okay, girlfriend. Let's remember that a gift is just that.... a token of someone's affection and/or gratitude. When your family takes the time and money to send you their gifts do you really want to respond with , " I'd like this instead"? This response sounds as if you're more interested in your happiness than their happiness in gifting you. Add a little more to your travel savings each month and treat yourself.
