Imagining Them Naked...

I’ve been asked by a dear friend to be a host for his upcoming fundraising gala. It’s his inaugural event and I want to help him make it a success. There's just a slight problem: While most people see me as gregarious and popular, I’m petrified of public speaking. Help me decide what to do!

Please!

Could this be an opportunity for growth? Is public speaking a phobia you’d like to overcome? Could this experience get you exposure for your business or personal venture? If so, hire a speaking coach to help you prepare, or pick up a how-to book like How to Develop Self-Confidence And Influence People By Public Speaking. If not, there’s nothing wrong with turning down this request. Maybe there’s another task you could help your friend with. Have a conversation with your friend letting him know what you can and can’t do. You know yourself best and you have to make decisions that ultimately benefit your happiness.

It appears the decision has already been made. You say you want to help him make his gala a success. Are there other things on the "to do" list that you can coordinate? Give him a call and let him know of all the ways you can and will help, but that speaking to an audience is not one of them.
