I'm not eating that!

My office environment is fun, friendly and tension free. My co-workers often hold potluck lunches on Wednesdays just because! The problem is, I’m a picky eater. Please don’t judge me when I tell you I prefer not to eat what they’re cooking. I don’t know what their kitchens are like, if they washed their hands or what ingredients they actually used. While I do participate and bring dishes for the potluck, I often just eat my own food. We’ve been doing these potlucks for a few months now but just recently one of my coworkers noticed and mentioned to everyone that I was only eating my own food. He said it like a joke and a few people laughed including me, nervously. So now, I’ve been loading up my plate and then secretly throwing it away when I walk back to my cubicle. I feel like such a fraud. Is this ok for the sake of getting along. Or should I be honest with my colleagues that I’m just not into their food?

Feeling guilty huh? Lol. OK, I would say what’s the harm, but the idea of wasting food by intentionally throwing it away is...well, wasteful! If I were in your shoes, I’d bring food for the potluck only if I truly enjoyed making the dishes and contributing. Not if I felt obligated, because you’re not. If contributing to feel part of the crew is the main concern, bring some cups and sodas. And if you don’t feel like eating their food, don’t. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.

My Momma Says…

Look, YOU are the CEO of your health and have every right to monitor what goes into your body. Of course, the issue is do you have reason to suspect your co-workers of less than sanitary food preparation habits. And, if you do, does that reflect a value judgment on their work habits, products, or them? Let's tackle the food prep issue first. You say you don't trust your co-workers' sanitation habits or food preparation rules. However, you sometimes bring food with the intent of your co-workers trusting you and eating it. This sets you up as either a hypocrite or a snob. If eating food prepared by unlicensed cooks is an issue for you, don't eat it. However, don't expect your co-workers to eat your dish. Adhere to the Golden Rule and do unto them as you would have them do unto you. Notify all that you love them dearly, but have a finicky stomach. Offer to bring the beverage ( in a sealed bottle , of course.) to the next shared meal. Then, indulge in conversation as you share your "potluck" with all.
